Jewellery Care Guide

Thin Chains and Bracelets

While dainty jewellery is always a favourite, caring for it requires a bit more attention.

We work with top manufacturers in Italy to ensure the best quality pieces; however, there are still a few things to keep in mind to prevent your thin chains and bracelets from breaking. Both gold and silver are soft metals, so it's important to be mindful of sweaters, scarves, cross body bags, and toddlers.

Sleeping with thin chains is one of the most common causes of breakage. Without realizing it, you may pull on your necklace or bracelet, causing the links to open. Accidental hard tugs can also compromise the integrity of the entire chain.  Working out or engaging in vigorous activities while wearing your jewellery should be done at your own risk.

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and is a lightweight, beautiful metal suitable for exquisite jewellery. However, it can tarnish over time due to exposure to atmospheric sulphur and certain chemicals.

Understanding Silver Tarnishing:

Silver tarnishes when it reacts with various chemicals found in everyday products. Here are some common culprits:

Oxidising: Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to air and products containing sulphur.

Perfume: The alcohol and fragrances can lead to tarnishing.

Hairspray: Aerosols can settle on your jewellery and accelerate tarnishing.

Creams and Lotions: Oils and chemicals in these products can cause reactions with silver.

Chlorine and Harsh Chemicals: Exposure to chlorine (from pools) and other harsh chemicals can significantly damage silver.

To keep your silver jewellery looking its best:

Store Properly: Use Ziploc bags or airtight containers.

Regular Cleaning: Wipe your jewellery with a soft cloth after wearing.

Limit Exposure: Remove silver jewellery when using beauty products or swimming.

By taking these simple steps, you can help prevent tarnishing and maintain the beauty of your silver jewellery!

925 Gold Vermeil

925 Gold Vermeil jewellery is one of the hottest trends right now as it strikes the perfect balance between quality and value. Many people tend to confuse vermeil with gold plating, although they share a few aspects, there is a big difference in quality, durability, and desirability.

Vermeil is a gold-finished material that is composed of a thick layer of 14k or 18k gold over solid sterling silver. The thickness of the gold portion is what sets vermeil jewellery apart from simple gold-plated pieces. The thickness of the gold portion must be a hefty 2.5 microns.  Another key factor here is that a vermeil piece has a sterling silver base (instead of brass or cheaper metals.)

Gold vermeil is a wonderful way to have great jewellery at a reasonable price, especially for large statement pieces. However, if you want to enjoy your gold jewellery for years without fear of fading or tarnishing, we recommend that you invest in solid gold. Plating, no matter how good, will wear off over time.

Gold vermeil should be cared for the same as sterling silver, please look into our sterling silver care guide.

Other tips on how to care for gold vermeil:

  • Remove gold-plated jewellery before swimming, bathing or washing your hands with chemical soaps.
  • Avoid applying perfumes, creams and hairsprays while wearing your gold vermeil jewellery.
  • Always remove gold vermeil jewellery before sleep to prevent wear. As the old saying goes, "Jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off".
Solid Gold Jewellery Care

At Glitz Jewellery we sell 10k, 14k & 18k gold, It is a precious metal that can last for many lifetimes and become cherished heirlooms.

These are the different characteristics of gold:

  • 10k Solid Gold: Comprises 10 parts gold (41.7%) and 14 parts alloys (58.3%).
  • 14k Solid Gold: Comprises 14 parts gold (58.3%) and 10 parts alloys (41.7%).
  • 18k Solid Gold: Comprises 18 parts gold (75%) and 6 parts alloys (25%).

Reminder: The higher the karat the softer the gold is.

Solid gold is particularly tarnish-resistant, hypoallergenic, and perfect for everyday wear, making it ideal for individuals with sensitive skin. However, gold is still a precious metal and requires basic care.

Here are a few tips we suggest for solid gold:

  • Remove jewellery when partaking in strenuous activities or exercising.
  • Remove when using harsh household cleaning products.
  • Remove when going to bed.
  • Remove before entering pools, hot tubs, or saunas as the chemicals can affect the shine of your jewellery.
  • Avoid spraying perfumes, hairspray or other hair products while wearing your jewellery.
  • Avoid rubbing lotion or sunscreen while wearing your jewellery.
  • When storing your jewellery remember to keep it in a dry place to protect it from daily exposure. We recommend all jewellery be put in Ziploc bags or airtight containers.

Purchasing either a gold polishing cloth or a liquid gold cleaner will help maintain the integrity of your piece over time.
