Jewellery Care Guide

Thin Chains and Bracelets

While dainty jewellery is always a favourite, caring for it requires a bit more attention.

We work with top manufacturers in Italy to ensure the best quality pieces; however, there are still a few things to keep in mind to prevent your thin chains and bracelets from breaking. Both gold and silver are soft metals, so it's important to be mindful of sweaters, scarves, cross body bags, and toddlers.

Sleeping with thin chains is one of the most common causes of breakage. Without realizing it, you may pull on your necklace or bracelet, causing the links to open. Accidental hard tugs can also compromise the integrity of the entire chain.  Working out or engaging in vigorous activities while wearing your jewellery should be done at your own risk.

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and is a lightweight, beautiful metal suitable for exquisite jewellery. However, it can tarnish over time due to exposure to atmospheric sulfur and certain chemicals.

Understanding Silver Tarnishing: Silver tarnishes when it reacts with various chemicals found in everyday products. Here are some common culprits:

  • Oxidizing: Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to air and products containing sulfur.: Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to air and products containing sulfur.
  • Perfume: The alcohol and fragrances can lead to tarnishing.
  • Hairspray: Aerosols can settle on your jewelry and accelerate tarnishing.
  • Creams and Lotions: Oils and chemicals in these products can cause reactions with silver.
  • Chlorine and Harsh Chemicals: Exposure to chlorine (from pools) and other harsh chemicals can significantly damage silver.

To keep your silver jewelry looking its best:

  • Store Properly: Use airtight bags or containers.
  • Regular Cleaning: Wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth after wearing.
  • Limit Exposure: Remove silver jewelry when using beauty products or swimming.

By taking these simple steps, you can help prevent tarnishing and maintain the beauty of your silver jewelry!

925 Gold Vermeil

Vermeil jewellery is one of the hottest trends right now as it strikes the perfect balance between quality and value. Many people tend to confuse vermeil with gold plating, and even though they do share a few aspects, there is a big difference in quality, durability, and desirability.

Typically, vermeil is a gold-finished material that is composed of a thick layer of 14k or 18k gold over solid sterling silver. The thickness of the gold portion is what really sets vermeil jewellery apart from simple gold plated pieces. The thickness of the gold portion must be a hefty 2.5 microns.  Another key factor here is that a vermeil piece is much better to have a sterling silver base (instead of brass or cheaper metals). Exactly what Glitz sells.

**Gold vermeil is a wonderful way to have great jewellery at a reasonable price, especially for large statement pieces, but if you want to enjoy your gold jewellery for years and years, without fear of fading or tarnishing, we recommend that you invest in solid gold (plating, no matter how good, will wear off if worn regularly. Remove gold plated jewellery before swimming, bathing or washing your hands with chemical soaps. Perfumes, creams and hairsprays can also have a negative effect, so always apply before putting on your jewellery. Always remove gold vermeil jewellery before sleep to prevent wear. As the old saying goes, "Jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off".

If you want to build a collection of high-quality jewellery without the pure gold price tag,  gold vermeil is a fantastic option.
